About the Procedure

What is epicanthoplasty?

Epicanthoplasty widens the inner front of eyes that look closed off, extending the horizontal width so your eyes appear larger and more open. It is an especially effective option when your eyes sit far apart or when an epicanthal fold covers the inner corners.

If your eyes are wide set or you have a monolid, widening the eye while releasing the epicanthal fold creates a bright, clear, refreshed gaze.

Know Your Eyes

What is the epicanthal fold?

The epicanthal fold is a fold of skin that covers the inner corner of the eye. It runs downward from the upper eyelid across the front of the eye, and because it hides the inner corner, it can make the eyes look small and closed off, and make them appear farther apart than they really are.

It is a very common trait, not a flaw, and releasing it is what gives epicanthoplasty its dramatic yet natural effect.

About 80 percent of Koreans have an epicanthal fold
Is It Right for You

Who benefits from epicanthoplasty

  • You have a pronounced epicanthal fold
  • You want larger, more open eyes
  • Your eyes look small because their horizontal width is narrow
Operation Method

How the surgery is done

Four steps from your first consultation to open, refreshed eyes, with the scar sutured out of sight.

Four step illustration of epicanthoplasty: designing the inner corner, incision along the designed line, redraping the skin around the epicanthal fold, and closing inward so the scar stays discreet.
01

Consultation and design

Before surgery, Dr. Lee consults with you in person and designs the opening that suits your eyes.

02

Precise incision

An incision is made precisely along the designed line at the inner corner of the eye.

03

Skin repositioning

The excess skin around the epicanthal fold is separated and repositioned.

04

Hidden closure

The incision is sutured toward the inside of the eye so the scar stays out of sight.
